Eling Tide Mill
Object
19th Century exterior lamp and mounting bracket.
Brief
To return the Tide Mill’s lamp to its original aesthetic following its removal during extensive restoration to the fabric of the building.
The client was keen to retain the look of an aged lamp but having the modern opaque security glass changed to clear toughened glass. Originally it would have been illuminated by an oil lamp, lit every evening, which has since been undated to an electric bulb.
Overall, the lamp was in a very poor condition. Layers of residue and black overpaint were removed to reveal the patinated copper framework beneath, broken and missing sections were repaired and colour to match. Patterns for new 4mm clear toughened glass panels were produced and fitted. Due to the estuary location of the Tide Mill the iron mounting bracket was bead blasted and powder coated. The conserved lamp was fitted with modern electrics and rehung in its original position, illuminating the toll gate adjacent to the Mill.

It can be seen at the Eling Tide Mill Experience, Totton, Hampshire.
